Besides the standard inside and outside bets, there are some additional special bets which are not offered by every casino. These bets are also called series and they are based on the position of the pockets on the roulette wheel. Usually, there are three different series which are considered: neighbours of zero, the third and the orphans. In the French roulette these are called voisins du zero, tiers and orphelins, respectively. The neighbours of zero are all 16+1 numbers which are situated between 22 and 25 on a single zero wheel. On the same wheel the Third are the 12 numbers between 27 and 33. The rest eight numbers are called the orphans. Another special bet is on a number and its neighbours. This special bet is a bet on a number and its neighbours, so it is a bet on 5 different numbers. In many casinos, not only special bets but also the combination of special bets is allowed. By smart choice of the neighbours, a player can cover many of the possible pockets on the roulette wheel.
Bet odds, Payouts, House Edge and House Hold
The possible winning for a bet within roulette game directly depends on the odds of the bet. The odds and profit margins are calculated based on a purely statistical contribution. The profit is calculated as the possible positive results for the player in relation to 36 possible results, the result is taken minus 1 since the player keeps his profit. This means that for a straight-up bet the player gets 35 times his bet as a profit, while for the most save bet, the colour, odd or even or the range 1-18, 19-36, a player gets only his bet as a profit. Since the chance for one street is 3 pockets out of 36, consequently the rate is 11 times the bet for the right choice of a street.
The house edge is due to the existence of one or two zeros. The number of pockets is therefore 37 or 38 depending on the type of roulette. The statistical long-term house edge on a single betting is therefore 2/38 = 5.3% or 1/37 = 2.7%. When special or combination bets are allowed, the house edge is even higher. This is because the negative effect of the zeros on the player’s odds is sometimes double-counted. Without the zeros, a perfect roulette would be absolutely fair. This means that the statistical long-term expectations in this hypothetical game for the player or the casino would be absolutely the same. Interestingly, the house hold is much higher, between 20 and 30%, which is even higher than on a slot machine having typically a house edge of around 15%. The house hold is the total win of the casino for a roulette table. Certain factors influence most players’ behaviour. Firstly, the fact that almost every player tends to continue playing in case of winning and losing until he runs out of money or motivation. The second problem of most players is that their financial resources are very limited. All statistical calculations result only in expectation values for a long time. For a statistical evaluation, most players are playing with too high bets. Imagine a player who has chips which are worth 1,000 units. In a casino he will rarely go to a table and place bets with the value of 1. More likely he will play with much more units. Typically he will gamble with bets between 50 and 100 since the possible profits are higher, simply ignoring the higher risks.
