Roulette is the most famous gambling game. It can be found in most of the casinos all over the world. During a roulette game, every player bets on different number, combination of numbers or a colour. In order to determine the winning field, the croupier spins the roulette wheel and afterwards spins a small ball in the opposite direction. The roulette wheel is a special wheel which contains 36 numbered pockets where half of them are black, the other half red and in addition there are one or two green fields. History

This gambling game was most probably invented in the 18th century in France. The name of the game can be translated as “small wheel”. It is believed that roulette is a combination of different English, French and Italian games. A French Novel, published in 1801, describes roulette gambling in Paris in 1796. In this time, the game was already fully developed, therefore the rules are very comparable to those nowadays, including the two “house fields” 0 and 00.

The European version with a single house field “0” was developed in 1843 in German Bad Homburg. Compared to the classical roulette, or nowadays also called “American Roulette”, the European roulette has smaller house advantage.

In the 1860s, just a few European places allowed legal gambling. The most famous one was Monte Carlo which is a district of the Principality of Monaco at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Since the European roulette became one of the most popular games, now it is played in most of the casinos worldwide. The only exceptions are the casinos in America which are still using the more profitable American roulette with a “0” and a “00”.
